Banish Acne Before the Big Day!

When I turned 30 I prayed that I could go back to having the skin of a teenager. The universe delivered but not in the way that I had intended and I suddenly found myself dealing with a seemingly incurable case of adult acne. Ug! I tried expensive lotions and potions, weird diets and blew my budget on facials but nothing seemed to make a difference.

I finally bit the bullet and saw a dermatologist. Here are the products that they recommended and that I now recommend to my clients. They might not be glamorous but they actually worked! Most of them are OTC which is a great place to start and the best part? They are cheap so you have nothing to lose.

This contains 4% Benzyl Peroxide. It can be drying if you have sensitive skin so only use it where necessary. For example, my pesky pimples hang around on the lower half of my face so that's where I use it. Then I rinse and wash the rest of my face with my regular face wash. Benzyl Peroxide stains towels so washing it off thoroughly is important. Use an older towel to dry your face just in case you missed a spot.

This used to be a prescription product but now you can buy it OTC. Yay! This contains retinol which takes some getting used to so start slowly. Mix a smudge of the gel the size of a grain or rice with your regular moisturizer at night time only. You can increase over time as your skin adjusts. Dryness and mild peeling can be expected at first but beautiful, clear skin is on the way.

Do not skip this step! Retinol increases skin's sensitivity to the sun so you need to start wearing sunscreen daily. This one won't cause breakouts so lather up in confidence!

If this doesn't work don't give up!

A trip to a licensed dermatologist will give you plenty more options. From topical antibiotics such as Clindamycin Gel to oral tablets, lasers and light treatments, there will be a solution to your skin issues and it may even be covered by insurance.
